BMW HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES: PASSION, SPORTS, AND SUSTAINABILITY
The BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites Organising Committee is aware of the mountains’ priceless value. Which is why it has chosen that the iconic event for off-road cycling, known as the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world, needs to be the target of a number of strategies and initiatives to ensure its environmental and social long-term sustainability. In other words, the aim is to eliminate any potential impact on the mountains and the communities involved in the race to maintain their delicate balance intact. Right from the start, back in 2010, we understood how the Dolomites represented an important and irreplaceable added value to the HERO event. We love our beautiful and yet fragile region. Which is why we have to take care of it, protect it from mankind, and protect its natural heritage so that future generations can make the most of it. This mammoth effort will have a transversal effect on the HERO’s organisation. It will yield the first results during the next edition planned on 12 June 2021 – results we can achieve with the help and collaboration of each and every single HERO!
SOUTH TYROL: THE STAGE OF THE BMW HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES
Ours is more than a mountain bike race. The BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites is a celebration of passions, overwhelming love for sports and mountain biking as well as for nature and the mountains. South Tyrol is a unique region and offers one-of-a-kind experiences. Vast swathes of green meadows and forests are overlooked by the imposing Dolomites’ peaks which have inspired so many people to dream big. Mountaineering history was made here, and the region boasts rolling hills covered in vineyards, timeless food and cultural traditions which stand out for the perfect fusion between Alpine and Mediterranean traits. A beautiful story which can be told in its three official languages: German, Italian, and Ladin (https://www.suedtirol.info/en). The beloved Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are also responsible for the event’s success. All the world envies our unique mountains, which is all the more reason to protect them. South Tyrol is a tourist destination which boasts a vast summer offer comprising trekking, cycling, and mountain biking; visitors can also dive into the local folklore, culture, and traditions. An all-round great offer which always places environmental sustainability first. The majestic Dolomites overlook the two legendary routes of the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites marathon which start and finish in Selva d Val Gardena. They wind their way all along the passes and peaks of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba, Val di Fassa, and Alpe di Siusi until they return to the starting point. These charming and picturesque locations stand out for their outstanding offers and are the ideal tourist destinations for outdoor sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. You can spend your days hiking on trails (easy, medium, hard) surrounded by breathtaking and unique landscapes under the gaze of the majestic and stunning summits. THE HERO DOLOMITES BIKE FESTIVAL: THE MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL AT THE HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES, THE BEATING HEART OF THE ‘HERO WORLD SERIES’ 2021 INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
The HERO World Series is a lot more than a mountain bike race circuit. It is the fulfilment of a dream to deliver the emotions of an iconic competition overseas: the HERO Südtirol Dolomites, the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world which takes place at the foot of the Dolomites.
Everything started here, and that is why the HERO Südtirol Dolomites is the circuit’s ‘beating heart’. Over the course of ten years it has won over the heart of many cyclists and is an event which athletes from all over the world look forward to. Those very same athletes made it grow and become what it is today: the HERO, a unique challenge with, first and foremost, oneself as well as with the rest of the participants.
Save the date: the eleventh edition will take place on 12 June 2021 in the heart of Selva di Val Gardena and on its two legendary routes: 86 km and 4,500 hm, and 60 km and 3,200 hm. The 2021 HERO Südtirol Dolomites is part of the prestigious UCI Marathon Series 2021: this is an important acknowledgement as only six marathon and two stage races, among the most important and exclusive in the worlds, are part of the UCI Series.
But there is more. A celebration of everything mountain bike, the HERO Dolomites Bike Festival, will also be taking place. This itinerant event will grace every stage of the circuit, spanning four days with plenty of events for participating athletes and their groups as well as all mountain bike aficionados.
The HERO Dolomites Bike Festival, 10-13 June 2021
The HERO Dolomites Bike Festival will take place between 10 and 13 June 2021 and kick off with the possibility of exploring the routes with local guides. The HERO Village will also return with its stands featuring go-to MTB brands. The HERO Women’s Lounge is also back, a dedicated space for the race’s women as well as partners, friends, and wives of our HEROes. The HERO Night will take place on Thursday, 10 June 2021 at 9 p.m. – a special evening to revisit the emotions of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites. The following day, the HERO KIDS, a noncompetitive race which always attracts a great number of kids between the ages of 4 and 12, will kick off at 3 p.m. The highlight will be, of course, Saturday,12 June 2021 when, from 7.10 in the morning, the seventh edition of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites will take place. After all the athletes cross the finish line, the unmissable HERO Great Finale awards ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. The HERO Dolomites Bike Festival will conclude the following day with the ZERO Dolomites: a day on your bike dedicated to sustainable mobility.
Registrations for the HERO Südtirol Dolomites open on Thursday, 1 October 2020 (08.00am Europe time) at www.herodolomites.com
HERO WORLD SERIES 2021: GET READY TO MOUNTAIN BIKE IN DUBAI, THE DOLOMITES, AND THAILAND
The HERO World Series’ Organising Committee had to take the difficult decision to interrupt the World Series scheduled for the second half of 2020 to protect the athletes who wanted to hop onto their mountain bikes and conquer the title of ‘HERO’.
We are therefore delighted to announce the dates for the 2021 Hero World Series international circuit! The event was created in the wake of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites’ success, the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world. Over the last ten years, the event has attracted thousands of bikers from all over the world to the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The dates for the HERO World Series international circuit are: HERO Dubai Hatta on 5 March 2021, HERO Südtirol Dolomites on 12 June 2021, and HERO Thailand on 25 September 2021. These three races are part of the UCI 2021 calendar. Considering the last months filled with uncertainty, looking to the future is our way of wanting to continue with such an ambitious and modern project.
Gerhard Vanzi says, The HERO Südtirol Dolomites has always been a challenge right from the start and, just like back then, we are ready to face our biggest one yet. These are unprecedented times and we want to ensure that sports still represent hope and faith not only in our athletes’ skills, but in an entire community brought together by a common passion.’
Registrations open on Thursday, 1 October 2020 on the official circuit’s website www.heroworldseries.com for one or all three races of the event. The provisional starting list features all athletes who had signed up for the HERO World Series 2020 which was then postponed. These athletes will automatically receive a competition number for the 2021 races.
Vanzi continues by adding, ‘We will do out utmost to protect every participant and their group. This is of fundamental importance and takes precedence over the success of the event: we want to ensure that all safety protocols in the countries involved are respected.’
HERO DUBAI HATTA - 5 March 2021
A mesmerising and unique location which went down well with every participant during the first edition of the HERO Dubai Hatta. The desert challenge will once again take place across Hatta’s nature reserve, precisely in Hatta Wadi Hub, an infrastructure for outdoor sports. There are two confirmed routes: 60 km with 1,600 hm, and 30 km with 800 hm. Save the date and see you on 5 March 2021 to experience incredible emotions that only cycling in a desert can give you.
HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES - 12 June 2021
Where everything started and the most awaited event: the HERO Südtirol Dolomites boasts two routes - 86 km with 4,500 hm, and 60 km with 3,200 hm. This is a lot more than the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world. This is the HERO. This word embodies sacrifice, commitment, passion, courage – everything needed by a biker to become a ‘hero’ of the Dolomites, a majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site. Save the date and see you on 12 June 2021: the centre of Selva di Val Gardena, the start and end of the race, will come alive with a colourful explosion of flags from five continents. The HERO Südtirol Dolomites is part of the UCI Marathon Series 2021: this is an important acknowledgement as only six marathon and two stage races, among the most important and exclusive in the worlds, are part of the UCI Series.
HERO THAILAND - 25 September 2021
You thought that Dubai was exotic? Think again, because the HERO World Series circuit spreads its wings and races even further east to the third race: the HERO Thailand on 25 September 2021 will take place in Chiang Rai. This unique tourist destination is a beloved location not only for its countless sights, such as the Wat Rong Khun’s White Temple, but also for its exotic atmosphere. Two routes await our bikers: 65 km with 1,200 hm, and 30 km with 600 hm. Both wind their way across the typical wilderness for a unique experience.

SPORTHILFE HEROES RUN 2020: SOUTH TYROL, ‘BURSTING WITH ENERGY - TIME TO RESTART TOGETHER!’
South Tyrol was the first region to implement lockdown and the first to relaunch its economy and businesses. It also wants to be the first region to restart and to do so it needs the help of all heroes who just like you have learnt to love these places by cycling on their mountains, specifically on the trails of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites, the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world.
Every little helps: even you can contribute with that same determination which characterises a true HERO spirit!
How?
By taking part in the SPORTHILFE HEROES RUN initiative: it will take place between the week of 27 June to 5 July 2020, calling on everyone to run, walk, or cycle on a bike or mountain bike to reach the 100,000 km goal! All the kilometres can be tracked and recorded on the free SPORTHILFE HEROES RUN app available for iOS and Android.
Run, walk, or cycle on your own or with your family, at your own pace, on the roads and paths that you love the most towards one common goal. You can also take part individually on behalf of a sports club or a company - always in compliance with social distancing and safety rules currently in force in the province of Bolzano.
The initiative is promoted by Sporthilfe Alto Adige, a non-profit organisation whose aim is to help and support young, talented South Tyrolean athletes. SPORTHILFE HEROES RUN 2020 wants to homage all those true heroes that have fought on the front line during this difficult health crisis by taking care of the entire community: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, the police, civil defence but also shop assistants and retailers, and our families, of course!
After all, let’s not forget that families played a pivotal role in facing this health crisis: mothers and fathers (parents, educators) had to become teachers, classmates, and sandbox friends from one day to the next. That is why we believe they deserve our ‘thank you’, or rather 100,000 of them, to the tune of the kilometres they can contribute to by participating in the SPORTHILFE HEROES RUN project.
An active way of relaunching wellbeing which also promotes sports across all levels - from amateur to professional athletes - while also raising funds for South Tyrol’s next generation of athletes!

SEE YOU IN 2021!
Dear friends,
Unfortunately, the health emergency in our country and the rest of the world is still a serious matter. The measures taken seem to be producing the first positive results.
However, now is not the time to let our guard down.
The success of an event like the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites, played on our home turf and at the foot of the majestic Dolomites, is important for the role of the mountain bike. At this time, our main concern is protecting the people who have made this such a beloved event. In other words, the athletes.
We have decided to postpone the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites. We did so to protect them, and out of respect for those people fighting on the front lines of this war. We want people to experience the lively and community spirit of the HERO, which simply would not have been the same this year. The race will therefore take place in June 2021.
See you next year. Let us rejoice in the prospect of sharing an even better and bigger edition of the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites together. The race will also represent the final stage of the HERO World Series 2021.
YOU ARE THE REAL HEROES!
We cannot deny the fact that nobody would have ever expected such a far-away emergency to impact our daily lives so profoundly. It will surely mark our lives forever.
Unarmed before such a small and invisible enemy, one as devious as it is evil. We are ‘blocked’ in our homes: these are the best places to be if we want to protect each other and our loved ones… and yet they feel stifling under our ever-growing wish to return to normality.
These are troubling times. So we want to thank all the real HEROES out there. Those who have been waging an incredibly tough war in the hospital wards, the A&E beds, in ambulances and in countless nursing homes.
Our heartfelt THANK YOU goes to doctors, nurses, technicians, but also the police and volunteers.
We may be ‘heroes’ when it comes to sport, but that is all we are: we never forget who the true heroes are. You. Your resilience in taking on and overcoming this challenge is one of the values the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites has embodied right from the start. It is a power which only superheroes have, using it to fight threats and dangers: both in true emergencies and in sport.
HELP BERGAMO: DONATE TO VITTORIA AND WIN DARIO ACQUAROLI’S LEGENDARY MOUNTAIN BIKE
The city and province of Bergamo have been the hardest hit by the Covid-19 emergency. Vittoria and Dario Acquaroli, MTB World Champion, are contributing by creating a fundraising campaign called ‘UNITI per Bergamo’ (United for Bergamo).
Dario Acquaroli has won many races, but the heart of this campaign is the bike he rode when he won the U23 World Championship in Cairns, Australia, in 1996. A donation of at least €5 will give you the chance to be selected and win this mountain biking legend. Of course, the larger the donation, the higher the likelihood of your name being drawn as explained in the campaign’s rules.
The proceeds will go to the ‘Associazione Padana Emergenza ONLUS’ to support the mobile ICUs in Bergamo who are tirelessly fighting Covid-19.
Our heartfelt thanks go to you for your support!

HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES, A DOCUMENTARY ON ITS EMOTIONS AND VALUES
The first edition of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites was awash in a potpourri of emotions: confused and, maybe, contrasting ones. You could feel it in the air, see it in the eyes of the 400 cyclists waiting behind the starting line. Everything was new, the magnificent Dolomites cutting a fine figure from their lofty heights, ready to show them how the chain’s immensurable beauty was directly proportional to its strength and harshness.
The following ten editions saw the number of HEROes grow to 4,000, ready to cross the starting line and compete on now known but not less hard trails and paths; the mountains more beautiful with every passing year, a home away from home for our cyclists. There is no relaxing on the couch here: just a few minutes after the start of the hardest mountain bike marathon in the world there is no time for idle thoughts. All they can do is focus on the race.
Each and every one of these Heroes has their personal reasons for being here. Surely, they will have asked themselves what pushed them to take on this challenge in the first place at least once, the well-known, ‘Why on earth am I here again?’ There are many reasons, and those reasons merge with the values that have made the HERO such a beloved and at the same time event to be reckoned with.
The answers can be heard in this emotion-laden documentary which will have you glued to your seats. The reasons for participating in a race like the HERO are far from obvious: grit and strength of people who have turned their passion for mountain biking into a profession; a redemption of sorts, a challenge against oneself to prove they can do it, especially after a difficult period in their life. And determination to get back in the game, diving into a sport discipline which is so different from the one which sees men in shorts run towards a ball in a stadium. And then again, a wish for change and rebirth: impulses which make us accept a challenge in all its facets.
This is HERO Südtirol Dolomites. Unique and original across a range of different emotions.
