A NEW WORLDWIDE PARTNER OF THE HERO: THE BEGHELLI GROUP
Beghelli – specialising in lighting and electronic system sectors for the protection of homes and companies has always been associated with technology and services which contribute to the wellbeing of persons, their safety and the quality of the environment. It is from this concern for the safety of persons and the passion for cycling that the wish of the Beghelli Group to become Worldwide Partner of the HERO emerged, and with the development of the new “SalvalavitaGO! Beghelli” there is the chance to constantly accompany the biker on every outing.
HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES 2018: A VERY SPECIAL RACE PACK
In the practical and handy shopper bag with the HERO name featured, there is also a Gore® Wear T-shirt, displaying an attractive HERO design. The short-sleeved garment with zip incorporated is in jersey material, favours perspiration, helps to regulate the body temperature, and is perfect for mountain bike outings in spring and summer.
HERO SÜDTIROL DOLOMITES 2018: A VERY SPECIAL RACE PACK
The HERO Südtirol Dolomites race pack has a great surprise in store for you: the new Beghelli safety device, designed for those who practice sports in isolated areas. The “SalvalavitaGO! Beghelli”, complete with an impermeable and anallergic strap is personalised with the HERO brand, and is able to visualise on a map the geographical location of the person who is wearing it. In case of need or emergency – and by placing pressure on two buttons – it is connected automatically to the smartphone, and simultaneously sends calls and emergency notifications to the numbers memorised on the application, and communicates the geographical position of the person wearing the bracelet. Furthermore, by activating the “absence of movement” function, the device can be used for an automatic alarm emission, should there be no sign of movement over a 3 minute period.

NINE AND COUNTING FOR THE HERO! SATURDAY 16 JUNE IS THE DAY
Remember those incredible moments of the HERO 2017? The splendid victories of Juri Ragnoli and Elena Gaddoni, the smiles of all who managed to finish and become a HERO and to be remembered as such; the applause of family and public along the route and at the finish of what is not only the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world but also the long distance mtb race with the highest number of finishers recorded. And the special thing is that the same thrills and the same memorable moments can be enjoyed again next year: the HERO Südtirol Dolomites 2018 will celebrate the ninth running of the race. The date to note in your diary or on your smartphone is Saturday 16 June 2018. The two routes, one of 86km and the other of 60 km have been confirmed, and the race will as usual wind away through the magnificent Dolomites landscape, and as usual the magic of the HERO is sure to capture the imagination of all those participating and setting off on the journey of their lives from Selva Val Gardena.
THE HERO ON TV
Again, this year the HERO race enjoyed great TV coverage at an international level, thus showing for yet another time the pulling power this event joys among biking fans from all over the world. On Saturday 17 June, the satellite channel Eurosport showed parts of the race in 67 countries across Europe, Asia and the Pacific – more than two hours of the race shown and commented on in more than 20 languages! Moreover, race coverage was shown in the USA, Canada, and Taiwan by the Eleven Sports broadcaster. A real amazing TV coverage, and added to this was direct streaming of the race on some really popular web portals, such as repubblica.it, gazzetta.it and tuttosport.com. All in all, a race which continues to grow in popularity and attracts the interest of a worldwide audience.
SKY ICARUS: MATTEO MARZOTTO and IADER FABBRI at the HERO 17
Each and every year the HERO becomes the backdrop to stories of great personal importance and drama. The 2017 race was no different and saw at the start two individuals who in one way or another have become identified with cycling. Matteo Marzotto, a big mtb fan, was this year among those on the race start line together with 4016 other heroes. After months of training alongside friend Iader Fabbri – he too at the start in Selva - Matteo came home well tired but in the respectable time of 7.39’08”. Thanks to the new Action Camera Xplova5, Matteo and Iader were able to film every detail of their experience. Be sure not to miss their story, to be broadcast on Sky Sport HD, and enjoy this fascinating Icarus 2.0 special!
RELIVE THE HERO 2017!
The thrills and excitement of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites are still very much beating in the hearts and minds of all those who took part in the challenge on Saturday 17 June, the day when they set off from Selva Val Gardena in the quest to write their names in the honours list of the world’s toughest mountain bike marathon. And now, just over two weeks from that memorable day, you can relive the most dramatic and significant moments of your HERO experience, this all thanks to the photo album and films that you can see on the official site.
A BIG THANKS TO 500 VOLUNTEERS
Thanks is a simple word and at times it is not enough. Indeed, our thanks is never enough to express our appreciation of the contribution made by 500 volunteers, they having contributed in great manner to the success of the HERO Bike Festival. Whether the help was in distributing start numbers, race packs, helping at the feeding stations along the route, signposting the way, all was vital to the running of the HERO. One thing is certain, and that is that without the volunteers this event would not enjoy the prestige it commands. 500 times thank you to all volunteers.
A HERO DIPLOMA
We well know that the HERO is not just a race but it is a story to be told and told over again. Photos, jerseys, even the HERO backpacks are testimony to this, and of course there is the race medal itself to safely keep. And it is important also to have something which shows your participation in the race, proof of your achievement. On our site, all you HEROes can download your personal diploma indicating your finish time. It will be the living proof of your HERO spirit, a sense of pride to be shown in your office, in your workshop, in your gym locker, or just simply placed on the garage wall above your bike.
THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR EFFORTS
Even if the highlights of the event will live on long in our memory it is equally true that with the passing of time some details and even essential moments will become blurred, lack the colour and suspense of the moment. For this reason it will be difficult to give up the chance of having the book of the race: an album packed with photographs so that your HERO 2017 remains ever fresh for you, your family, and friends to enjoy. To preserve the precious moments you experienced at the HERO you can purchase on the site of Sportograf a souveneir of your endeavours!
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR HEROES!
We are still living on our skins the thrills of an amazingly tough race, and with this fresh in mind it seems the least we can do in acknowledgement of your sacrifice and willingness to tackle the challenging climbs and descents through the Dolomites Passes is to say “Thanks for all!” Thanks for the sensations as without your effort multiplied 4017 times it would not have been possible to experience such an exciting race. Our thanks go to every single one of you and the memories of you crossing the finish line will last long. The entire event, and its exciting nature, enabled we organisers and volunteers to keep our spirits high before, during, and after the race. Thank you HEROes for having made this 2017 edition of the race truly memorable!
ENERVIT, A PARTNER FULL OF ENERGY!
What is the best way to face the two demanding and tiring HERO 2017 race routes? Enervit has the solution for you! Prepare with a strategy of sound integration which is tried and tested in training – this the best way to reduce the tension and to improve performance – and to avoid unwelcome surprises during the race itself. Racing along paths requires a lot of attention and the handling of a MTB is a task for hands and body! The Equipe Enervit has come up with the solution Enervit One Hand. These are half portions of Enervitene gel, easy to consume and easy to handle – with one hand of course! Our advice is to take them every 20-30 minutes during the race so as to assure an optimal energy level. And for those crucial and difficult moments in the race and and at the race end we recommend Enervitene cheer pack. And a very useful tip indeed: if you unscrew and then rescrew before the start of the race the product will be easier to handle at the opportune time during the race.
Discover the Enervit Energy Strategy for the HERO Südtirol Dolomites on:
Just in case you have not consulted the programme, here we give you a few last minute tips. Don’t forget that on Thursday or Friday you need to pick up your race start number. This can be done at the Pranives ice stadium in Selva. Between 10.00 and 20.00. After the race hunger will sure set in quickly so between 12.30 and 19.00 in Medal Plaza there will be a “pasta party” to enjoy, reserved especially for all our HEROes. This year there will also be products served from Dr. Schär so as to have a glutine free choice. And of course HEROes are entitled to their Finisher medal which can be collected from the Race Office in Piazza Nives. All clear? The only thing which remains is to pedal hard and make sure that the HERO spirit is with you all the way. Have a great race!
BUSY HERO DAYS
Busy days await our HEROes. On Thursday 16 and Friday 17 June there is the chance to try out parts of the course and to get in some last minute training – this between 9.00 and 16.00 on both days. A visit to the Bike & Tech Expo is a must, it open to 20.00 on both days. Friday is the day for the small ones as HERO Kids will take place: after the race there will be a prizegiving in Medal Plaza and a party with magician Remo showing us his tricks. And then the big day itself – set your alarm early on Saturday 17 for the race gets going at 7.10! We remind all bikers to check which starting grid they will be starting from.
To install “time gates” on the routes is not a joyous thing to do but it is a necessary precaution. Fixing “time limits” is in fact a measure taken with the health and safety of the bikers in mind: a tough and tiring race such as that of the HERO is not the right one for bikers who are not well trained or indeed have had very little training at all, and a continual effort at heights above 2000 metres can bring with it its share of danger. We well understand the disappointment of any bikers who are stopped at the “time gates” but let it be an incentive for them to retun next year fully prepared to live the experience of the HERO to the full. In comparison to 2016, we have installed an extra gate: at 16 km at Tablà, in Alta Badia. To see the maximum times for passage at each gate go to:
THE HERO RACE ROUTES
With just a few days to go to the big race day we are happy to report that the routes are in great condition, ideal for the 4017 bikers taking part in the HERO 2017. Both the 86 and 60 kilometre routes are perfect for biking and are ready to greet the brave bikers. Last year some unwanted rain and snow showers had left some parts of the route covered with snow or not in great condition but this year, thanks to the warm weather, we have a very different prospect in store and as they say in horseracing terms ‘ the going should be nice and firm’.
Generally, good weather is forecast for the entire weekend of the HERO Bike Festival.
Thursday morning sunny weather is forecast, in the afternoon there will be a greater chance of thunderstorms. On Friday alternation between sunny and cloudy intervals, on Saturday mostly sunny.

RDS HERO MEDIA PARTNER: THE HERO IN WORDS!
It is not so easy to explain the success that the HERO has achieved in recent years, notwithstanding that it is a tough and fascinating race. Many factors have contributed to its growth and its impact and its prestige, and one of these is certainly the element of communication. Press coverage has played its part in the event’s image, and in this media context we are always happy to introduce new innovative partnerships. As example we cite RDS, they responsible for conducting race interviews and general impressions on the event itself. And then it is worthy of note to mention the Dolomiten daily newspaper which again will be at our side in communicating all the race events and news to the South Tyrol public.
MATTEO MARZOTTO AND IADER FABBRI: A PERSONAL HERO ACCOUNT ON SKY ICARUS
Two personalities who have taken a keen interest in the HERO 2017, partly for work reasons and partly because of their love for biking. Matteo Marzotto is part of the latest generation of a family which has made a name for itself in fashion clothing in Italy. At the same time they have shown great passion for sport, right through from biking to crosscountry skiing. In recent months Matteo has been training for the HERO under the expert instruction of Iader Fabbri, friend and nutritional expert of all the Italian national cycling teams. Both men will take part in the race and have the new Action Camera Xplova5 to witness their experience and they will show their performance and their HERO story on the Icarus 2.0 programme on Sky Sport HD!
THE HERO IS MORE AND MORE SOCIAL
If on Saturday morning your supporters are not able to follow you on television they can always think of a ‘social’ solution to follow you! Again, this year we have decided to have a social wall on the HERO site which will gather all the most important messages from the most important platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Spread the word: ask your friends to post photos and messages with the hashtag #realhero and then you will feature as a “social hero”. At the finish line the social wall will be also shown on a maxiscreen!
THE HERO LIVE VIA STREAMING
And there is more besides! The evening events of the HERO Bike Festival 2017 will be shown live via streaming on www.herodolomites.com . EUROSPORT 2: THE HERO LIVE!
It does not happen every day to take part in a race that is broadcast live (for two hours!) in 67 countries in Europe, Asia and the Pacific with commentary in 20 languages. It is an extraordinary television coverage for a truly memorable event which viewers all over the world will enjoy. Direct coverage will be on Eurosport 2 International on Saturday 17 June between 10.00 and 12.00. The action from the HERO will also be shown by Eleven Sports in the USA, Canada and Taiwan.
LOACKER IS OUR PARTNER TO SATISFY EVERY SWEET
To sweeten up to our HEROes, surely in need of a sweet touch after such a tough race, we have come up with a special partner. In a fabulous Dolomites setting, at an altitude of 1000m, the famous Loacker wafers product range is produced, and from there it is delivered to all corners of the world. Since 1925 the Loacker name has been synonymous with fragrant wafers and chocolate specialities of the highest quality. The Loacker family selects the best of nature’s ingredients and produces with pride and passion its specialities. The Loacker Choco& chocolate wafer bars, delicious cream and fine chocolate layers are available in the following variants: Choco&Milk Cereals, Choco&Coco, Choco&Nuts and Choco&White. Their practical size and shape means they will find a space in every bag, be it for school, for work, for the gym or for free time outings. The Loacker snack range really does satisfy all customer desires and all the many taste palates. It is part of the HERO experience for our heroes to enjoy the Choco& product range and understand that the delightful bars are produced right here in the Dolomites, right here where they themselves are giving battle to conquest their moment of fame.
SOUTH TYROL PRODUCE ON SHOW
During the race and after the great effort of the race itself, our HEROes can replenish body and mind with the best of South Tyrol products. At the feeding points along the routes you can enjoy the crunchy Marlene apples, fresh fruit offered by Unterthiner and the ‘fresh from the oven’ Back Magic products. After the race enjoy a glass of Weihenstephan, the non-alcoholic beer distributed by Forst, ideal to quench your thirst. For bikers who are celiac or who have a gluten, dairy or wheat free diet, the known products of Dr. Schär will be available. And, to finish in great style, the HERO VIP lounge will have a selection of wines from ‘Cantina Bolzano’ and South Tyrol’s very own spumante will be provided by the ‘Tenuta Peter Zemmer’.
BIKING WITH NATURE IN MIND
Throwing rubbish to the ground whilst biking is a terrible habit. Often, taken up with a competitive desire and will to win, many bikers leave rubbish along the race route, without even realising the damage they are causing to nature, to the animals and the meadows in particular. With this fact, very much in mind we ask our HEROes to keep empty gels and snack wrappers in their pockets, so avoiding the spread of litter along the route and consequently the risk of being disqualified. Thinking about it for a moment we realise that true heroes stand out also for these simple gestures: respect the race of your dreams in all senses and leave along the race route only the sweat and toil of your efforts!
AN INVITATION TO HELP MAKE THE RACE 100% ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Biking through nature, in a unique landscape such as the Dolomites, means to come into contact and to live alongside your immediate surroundings, and consequently there is the obligation to reduce our impact on the environment to the very minimum. For this very reason, we at HERO Südtirol Dolomites invite everybody - bikers, families and friends, tourists in general – to adopt every measure possible to respect nature. The “Green Event” certification our event enjoys is witness to our efforts to reduce to zero any form of pollution caused: right through from support for locally produced products, to the use of all promotion material on recycled paper, to the reduction of waste produced during the race, to the use of public transport. And remember that to make our race ecosustainable 100 %, we need your contribution and your support in general. Thanks for your help!
FORST IS A HERO PARTNER
A glass of beer will certainly be needed to celebrate the task achieved, and it will be FORST brewery, exclusive distributor for Italy of the Weihenstephan label, to quench the thirst of all at the HERO Südtirol Dolomites 2017. In fact, the non alcoholic Weihenstephaner Hefeweißbier is the ideal solution on the day. It is a highly-fermented beer which refreshes and is the perfect choice for athletes such as our bikers. After the effort put in over the race routes our HEROes will certainly have deserved a drink!
DOLOMITES BIKE DAY
A great new event will add to this year’s HERO Bike Festival: on Sunday 18 June there will be the first edition of the Dolomites Bike Day, a day open to all fans if cycling wishing to bike along those passes of the Dolomites which have witnessed the great moments in the history of both road and off road cycling. The starting point will be Corvara, on to Arabba and the valleys of Livinallongo, across Passo Campolongo, and then to Passo Falzarego and further to Passo Valparola, before reaching the villages of La Villa and Corvara and so completing the circuit. It is a 51 kilometre route with an altitude difference of 1,290 metres and is a non-competitive day out on the bike – just biking for fun and the speed depending on your state of fitness. And the good news is that between 10.00 and 15.00 the passes of Campolongo, Falzarego and Valparola will be closed to motorised vehicles.
